The zombie comedy Fido picks up where Shaun of the Dead left off – in a world where “tamed” zombies are our servants or domestic companions. The comic possibilities are endless, yet Fido only exploits some of them (“We can’t afford a zombie!” an exasperated husband exclaims). By setting his movie in the 1950s, co-writer and director Andrew Currie instead resorts to a lot of spoofing of the domestic nuclear family of that era. Some of it is funny, but these sorts of jokes have been around for almost 50 years. All in all, this may have been better as a short on YouTube. With Carrie-Anne Moss as a prim and proper housewife, Billy Connolly as the new help and a riotously loony Tim Blake Nelson as a neighbor who is disturbingly close to his female zombie.
