Superbad

Another entry in the American Pie–Knocked Up school of sensitive-male, sex comedies, Superbad revels in raunchy humor while trying to reveal a good-natured heart. This time, though, the movie can’t have it both ways. The picture follows two horny, dorky high-schoolers (Michael Cera and Jonah Hill) trying to score some beer so they can score with some girls, and while the interplay between them is often a pitch-perfect depiction of male, adolescent friendship, Hill spews a sexually aggressive form of hatred toward women that can only be called misogyny. Superbad has its leads unconvincingly mature at the end; Hill’s ranting feels truer than anything else in the film.
