What were Mrs. Pink, Mrs. Orange, and Mrs. White doing while the boys were playing around in that Reservoir Dogs warehouse? I’m Your Woman, directed by Julia Hart from a screenplay she wrote with her husband, Jordan Horowitz, gives us something of an answer. Rachel Brosnahan (Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) stars as Jean, a 1970s trophy wife whose criminal husband suddenly goes missing. When ill-intentioned associates come looking for him, she’s forced to go on the run—exchanging her cozy life of wine in pink bathrobes for diner grub and low-rent motels. Brosnahan trades in the quick quips of Mrs. Maisel for a quieter intelligence and vulnerable uncertainty. For Jean, the ordeal is a terrifying rebirth, as she finds her sense of self while running for her life. (“I’ve never been on my own,” she says early on.) Hart’s penchant for muted pastels grows bolder as the movie goes on, to match Jean’s burgeoning awareness of the world around her and her place in it. With strong supporting performances from Arinze Kene and Marsha Stephanie Blake as two unlikely acquaintances who help Jean along the way.
