From Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer, this tells of the unconventional redemption of a self-destructive nymphomaniac (Christina Ricci) at the hands of a God-fearing, blues-playing farmer (Samuel L. Jackson). It’s telling, however, that the film mostly lingers on the sort of behavior Ricci’s Rae needs to be redeemed from, not to mention the barely-there wardrobe she favors (when she favors one at all). If the movie was really interested in Rae’s struggle to be more than a self-loathing sex object, it would spend less time depicting her as one.
