Catch and Release

Written and directed by Susannah Grant (the screenwriter of Erin Brockovich), this is the rare chick flick that defines its heroine on her own terms, not in terms of the husband or boyfriend she wants or has. Appropriately, the movie opens with the loss of a man. After her fiance is killed in a skiing accident on the eve of their wedding, a young woman (Jennifer Garner) attempts to redefine herself at a time when she had thought her identity had been set for life. Garner has an opportunity to hit a lot of different notes, and she nails most of them. With deft comic support from director Kevin Smith (Clerks) in the girlfriend role.
