This means to show that Steve Carell has range, but the fact that it doesn’t is more of a reflection on the picture than on Carell. He stars here as Dan Burns, a widower and father of three girls whose life comes apart during a reunion vacation at his extended family’s summer home. Though there are a few genuine moments here and there, the movie also is full of forced wackiness and contrived twists. Too often, real life has nothing to do with it.
