Dan in Real Life

This means to show that Steve Carell has range, but the fact that it doesn’t is more of a reflection on the picture than on Carell. He stars here as Dan Burns, a widower and father of three girls whose life comes apart during a reunion vacation at his extended family’s summer home. Though there are a few genuine moments here and there, the movie also is full of forced wackiness and contrived twists. Too often, real life has nothing to do with it. With Juliette Binoche and Dane Cook.
