An atmospheric account of an affair between a married woman (Julianne Moore) and a novelist (Ralph Fiennes) in World War II London, this adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel has been described as a love triangle involving those two and God, so heavily do religious themes come into play. Indeed, the story seems like little more than an
overheated romance until you consider things from God’s point of view, especially when Moore’s character promises to dedicate her life to her faith if Fiennes’ novelist is spared during a bombing raid. During such moments, The End of the Affair is about the heavenly pursuit – no matter what the human costs – of one woman’s soul.
