Fantastic Four:
Rise of the Silver Surfer

This second installment tries to enliven things by adding the title character, an intergalactic traveler whose arrival on earth causes atmospheric chaos. The trouble is, it’s hard to get much of a spark from a faceless, nearly speechless character who looks like the villain from Terminator 2: Judgment Day but has half of the personality. The truth is, the surfer fits into the series all too well. The Fantastic Four – stretchy scientist Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd), his invisible fiance Sue Storm (Jessica Alba), her fiery brother Johnny Storm (Chris Evans) and the-not-very-incredible hulk Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis) – have to be the most humdrum comic-book characters to have ever dripped from a pen. They make you long for the thrilling adventures of someone called, say, The Accountant.
