I Am Legend

Further evidence that horror movies are best made quickly and cheaply. The monsters Will Smith faces in this apocalyptic thriller can best be described as zombies, yet instead of real, wild-eyed people the filmmakers have concocted expensive, computer-animated figures that essentially look like cartoonish, drooling mannequins. It’s like being chased through the Macy’s men’s department. Directed by Francis Lawrence from the Richard Matheson novel, I Am Legend manages a dazzling vision of an abandoned New York City and a few serviceable suspense sequences up until its midway point. Then the picture pretty much stops dead, making for a long slog until the underwhelming finale.
