In Bruges

Mostly this is one of those callous, too-clever hit-man comedies that have plagued us since Pulp Fiction, yet Colin Farrell and costar Brendan Gleeson – as two hired killers ordered to lay low in the medieval Belgian town of the title – elevate it beyond its gimmicky premise. Farrell’s Ray is the philistine of the pair, blissfully uncouth and crudely dismissive of the architectural wonders around him. Gleeson’s Ken, in contrast, would be happy to spend a few weeks in the town taking historical tours. Their rancor, playful at first, comes to a head when their vile boss (a scene-gnawing Ralph Fiennes) comes to town.
