Saved!

A statement of faith in the guise of sacrilege, Saved! takes place in a conservative Christian high school and follows a faithful teen named Mary (Jena Malone) who tells us she’s “been born again my whole life.” That’s fine with her, at least until she gets pregnant, her boyfriend tells her he may be gay and his parents ship him off for “degayification.” Saved! can be a bitter pill, especially during a speechifying climax that’s more self-righteous than any of the movie’s pious characters, but believers in the audience may be surprised that by its end the movie has embraced the concept of faith – just not the hypocritical sense of superiority that often comes with it.
