Things We Lost in the Fire

Benicio Del Toro’s mushy pillow of a mug is perfect here for the part of Jerry Sunborne. A former lawyer and current heroin addict, Jerry is a rumpled wreck – yet Del Toro still manages to suggest there may be a gallant human being buried within. This also features Halle Berry in serious-actress mode as Audrey Burke, a young mother whose husband happens to be Jerry’s only remaining true friend. Audrey has always disapproved of the relationship, but when tragedy strikes, she and Jerry find unlikely healing through each other. Some suspension of disbelief is required, but for the most part this is genuine, unromanticized work.
