Gospel, The (2005)

Drama Rated PG

The church at the center of The Gospel is in Atlanta, but its address might as well be on Melrose Place. This is a soap opera through and through, with church politics in place of sexual dalliances. Scattered throughout are appearances by actual gospel stars, but the genuine emotion in their performances only further emphasizes

Human Stain, The (2003)

Drama Rated R

Screenwriter Nicholas Meyer and director Robert Benton plow through this adaptation of Philip Roth’s The Human Stain – about a disgraced college professor (Anthony Hopkins) who has an affair with a troubled local woman (Nicole Kidman) – but the novel proves unmanageable. They give it staid respect when it needs cinematic invention.

Igby Goes Down (2002)

Drama Rated R

Igby Goes Down is another independent feature chronicling the wayward ways of the young, restless and rich in the Big Apple. This doesn’t have much to say, as it follows 16-year-old Igby (Kieran Culkin) swearing and smoking in the usual, rebellious manner before rejecting his life of luxury in a last-minute stab at redemption.

Isn’t She Great (2000)

Drama Rated R

Just what we need in today’s celebrity-crazed age: a movie that celebrate’s fame for fame’s sake. Bette Midler stars as Valley of the Dolls author Jacqueline Susann, one of the first people to help turn stardom into the new American dream. Unfortunately, Isn’t She Greatblows a congratulatory kiss to Susann for being an untalented hack

Jungle Book 2, The (2003)

Family Rated G

Lazy product-pushing, in which Disney treats its treasured characters like pop-culture commodities. The movie reprises “Bare Necessities” not once but twice, betting on John Goodman to channel the jazzy growl of Phil Harris as Baloo the bear (he can’t). By the time all of the original’s characters are trotted out – from Mowgli the “boy

Evolution (2001)

Comedy Rated PG-13

This science-fiction comedy about two community college professors (David Duchovny and Orlando Jones) who discover an alien-infested meteorite sputters from one so-so gag to the next. Eventually, as the aliens evolve into more complicated creatures, even the occasional laughs are buried beneath relentless special effects. With Julianne Moore; from director Ivan Reitman.

Like Mike (2002)

Family Rated PG

Like Mike may have a silly premise – it’s about a 14-year-old orphan who gains NBA-level skills after donning a pair of Michael Jordan’s old sneakers – but the movie also displays something that’s more important for this kind of lightweight kids’ flick: a giddy, infectious spirit. It also helps that Lil’ Bow Wow, the

Godsend (2004)

Thriller Rated PG-13

This domestic thriller, about a couple (Greg Kinnear and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) who clone their 8-year-old boy after his death, could have gone in numerous intriguing directions, but it chooses the worst one of all of them. Almost a ghost story, almost a theological take on fate, Godsend instead goes for straight-out horror, with all the

Magdalene Sisters, The (2002)

Drama Rated R

A dramatization of life inside the Catholic Church’s now-closed Magdalene Asylums, this import catalogs the abuses heaped upon young women whose only crimes were flirting, getting pregnant out of wedlock or being raped. Director Peter Mullan repeatedly rails against such injustices, and if his indignation eventually wears thin, the performances from his three lead actresses

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002)

Family Rated G

This animated attempt to tell the story of the American West through the eyes of a wild mustang harks back to that time when adults were bored by children’s films. Kids who are into horses likely will do just fine, but others may check out – the stillness that enveloped the preview screening I attended
