Definitely, Maybe

What in the world is Abigail Breslin’s character doing in Definitely, Maybe? In what has to be one of ickiest framing devices in recent memory, a young father in the midst of a divorce (Ryan Reynolds) recalls his romantic past to his 10-year-old daughter Maya (Breslin). As a game, he changes the names of the three women he was closest to and makes his daughter guess which one of them wound up being her mother. The scenes between Reynolds and Breslin are fairly benign, yet the flashbacks – which make up most of the running time – are full of adult material. Hence little Maya’s question at one point: “What’s a threesome?” From clueless writer-director Adam Brooks.
