Godzilla Minus Zero

Godzilla Minus One carried real weight by weaving themes of loss and mourning into its primary function as a creature feature—much like the 1954 movie that started it all. Godzilla Minus Zero doubles down on this quality—ironically, to less effect. Not only are we reunited with the makeshift family of Koichi (Ryunosuke Kamiki), Noriko (Minami Hamabe), and their adopted daughter Akiko (Sae Nagatani)—a traumatized trio trying to create a new domestic unit amidst wounds that are physical and psychological—we also meet Professor Kanji Murakami (Min Tanaka). A survivor of both the American nuclear strike on Hiroshima and Godzilla’s march on Tokyo in Minus One (a connection literalized with back-to-back flashbacks), Murakami also anchors the prologue here, in which he barely escapes a rampaging, dragon-like monster who comes to be called Ghidorah. “I end up surviving again,” the professor laments. If returning writer-director Takashi Yamazaki’s treatment of these emotional themes is a bit heavy-handed this time, his handling of the monster sequences remains electrifying (and is ably accentuated by Naoki Satô’s shrieking score). Ghidorah looms over the landscape like a graceful, if lethal, giant, while much of the climactic showdown with Godzilla is filmed so that helpless human onlookers are also in the frame, emphasizing their insignificance amidst these monsters. Thrill-seekers should come away from Godzilla Minus Zero satisfied; those also appreciative of this long-running series’ psychological heft may feel a bit overserved.
