We Own the Night (2007)

Drama Rated R

“…isn’t interesting until it’s almost over.

Elizabeth (1998)

Drama Rated R

Startlingly sexy, with dark shadows and bold colors, Elizabeth is a well-appointed costume drama yet hardly a stuffy one. It springs from the screen as if it were a pop-up book. The sumptuous visual scheme is from director Shekhar Kapur, but the movie belongs to Cate Blanchett thanks to her breakout performance as England’s queen.

Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? (2007)

Drama Rated PG-13

“Is it overboard to consider the Tyler Perry phenomenon a cult?

The Apartment (1960)

Romantic Comedy Rated NR

The dork as romantic-comedy hero is considered to be a contemporary concept – honed by the likes of Tobey Maguire, Steve Carell and Adam Brody – but Jack Lemmon specialized in just such characters decades ago, particularly in The Apartment. A comedy about both romantic and corporate corruption, The Apartment stars Lemmon as C.C.

30 Days of Night (2007)

Horror Rated R

Gone Baby Gone (2007)

Drama Rated R

“…trickier than it appears – and far too tricky for first-time director Ben Affleck.

Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

Drama Rated PG-13

“…somehow finds just the right tone – two parts empathy, one part goofiness and not a trace of derision.

Rendition (2007)

Drama Rated R

“Despite the high stakes involved … Rendition plods along with little vitriol and even less energy.

The Heartbreak Kid (2007)

Comedy Rated R

“Are the Farrellys (not to mention Stiller) in a creative lull, or have I always been wrong about them?

I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With (2007)

Comedy Rated R

“…about as small as movies get, yet often, unexpectedly, as moving.

“Streep has what can only be called a commanding fragility.”

Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)

Drama Rated PG

“A crucial time-capsule movie…”
